Catalog notes

Checklist #452, printed at the top of PDF page 24 with NO section header (the page begins ‘THE FAMILY OF MAN, Check List, continued — Page 24’ and lists #452-#455 directly above the printed section header ‘SECTION 40: BOMB’ which begins at #456). Magnum (agency), Austrian, 22 x 16 3/4 cm. Sixth Ernst Haas plate in the checklist; count verified by grep this session against five prior plates at photo-0021 (#24, USA, Section 2 Lovers, Magnum/Austrian, 16 x 24 cm), photo-0147 (#154, USA, Section 15 Work A, Magnum/ARGOSY/Austrian, 28 x 20 1/4 cm), photo-0235 (#244, New Mexico, Section 21 Dance, Magnum/LIFE/Austrian, 87 x 73 cm), photo-0287 (#298, USA, Section 25 Relationships, Magnum/Austrian, 20 x 16 cm), photo-0329 (#341, USA, Section 26 Learning, Magnum/VOGUE/Austrian, 20 x 15 1/4 cm). First Haas plate set in Italy in this catalog; all six plates credited Magnum and Austrian — fully consistent attribution. The PDF page 24 image (read this session via Read tool, pages=24) prints the entry verbatim as ‘452 Italy Ernst Haas, Magnum, Austrian 22 x 16 3/4’. SECTION ASSIGNMENT NOTE: the checklist prints NO section header for plates #452-#455 (the prior section header ‘SECTION 39: FACES’ on page 22 ends at #451, and the next section header ‘SECTION 40: BOMB’ on page 24 begins at #456). Captions 40 (Bertrand Russell, ‘Authorities are unanimous in saying a war with hydrogen bombs is quite likely to put an end to the human race . . .’, install to left of 452, 5 x 53 1/2 cm) and 41 (Sophocles, ‘Who is the slayer, who the victim? Speak.’, install above 455, 2 1/2 x 32 cm) are printed between #455 and the SECTION 40 header (image-confirmed this session); per established convention captions are not given separate CSV rows. The four plates #452-#455 are mapped here to sec-hardship-suffering-war on the rationale that the Bertrand Russell H-bomb caption (installed to left of #452) and the Sophocles slayer/victim caption (installed above #455 — Eniwetok / US Coast Guard nuclear-test imagery) thematically frame these plates as a war/bomb-bridge group leading into Section 40 BOMB; this is structural inference, NOT a printed section assignment, and is hedged accordingly. Alternative readings (assigning these to the trailing edge of Section 39 FACES, or treating them as the unlabeled opening of Section 40 BOMB) are equally defensible; future cleanup may need to re-examine. Explicit ‘approximate, not canonical’ hedge per the catalog-builder schema-gap convention.
