Catalog notes
Checklist #465, Section 42 CHILDHOOD MAGIC (first numbered plate of Section 42). American, 48 x 37 3/4 cm — among the larger plates in this section. Fourth Nell Dorr plate in the checklist; count verified by grep this session against three prior plates at photo-0043 (#46, USA, Section 6 Nursing Mothers, American, 22 1/2 x 17 cm), photo-0050 (#53, USA, Section 8 Mothers and Babies, American, 24 x 22 1/2 cm), photo-0373 (#387, USA, Section 30 Aspirations, American, 22 x 18 1/4 cm). All four Dorr plates set in the USA and credited American — fully consistent attribution; this is the largest Dorr plate in the catalog so far (48 x 37 3/4 cm vs prior 22-24 cm leading dimensions). The PDF page 24 image (read this session) prints the entry verbatim as ‘465 U. S. A. Nell Dorr, American 48 x 37 3/4’. SECTION 42 CHILDHOOD MAGIC mapped to sec-rededication-future as an APPROXIMATE cluster fit, NOT canonical: the catalog’s 11 thematic clusters in data/sections.csv have no explicit ‘childhood magic’ cluster, and Section 42 sits in the post-Bomb closing arc described by src-moma-archives-highlights-1955 as ‘children / new life’ — the renewal-after-bomb sequence — and the show’s structural close. Alternative mappings to sec-play-learning (continuing childhood themes from Section 26 Learning and Section 35 Teens) or sec-family-children (continuing themes from Sections 9-13) are equally defensible; sec-rededication-future is selected on the rationale that the section forms the closing CODA of the entire exhibition (cf. brief: W. Eugene Smith’s A Walk to Paradise Garden, 1946, is the canonical closing image, expected at large dimensions near or at the section’s end) and the cluster’s printed theme ‘New life; the child, democracy, peace’ explicitly names ‘the child’ as a closing motif. Explicit ‘approximate, not canonical’ hedge per the catalog-builder schema-gap convention; future cleanup may need to introduce an explicit childhood-magic cluster or remap.
