Checklist #506, Section 14 LAND (out-of-numerical-order). 52 x 68 cm. The PDF page 8 image (re-read this session, 2026-05-02) prints the entry verbatim as ‘506 U. S. A. William Garnett, American 52 x 68’. This is the second of the two out-of-range three-digit plates that interrupt the 1-503 numbered sequence (the other is #505 — see photo-0490, Belgian Congo, Lennart Nilsson, in Section 15). #506 is positioned after the in-section plates of LAND (#115 out of order, then #121-#141 in order), after CAPTIONs 12 and 13, and after the also-out-of-order #168 (Mexico, Peter Stackpole) — i.e., the sequence at the end of Section 14 reads …#141 Metcalf → CAPTION 12 → CAPTION 13 → #168 Stackpole → #506 Garnett → SECTION 15: WORK (A) at #142. Whether this out-of-range numbering reflects a late addition, an internal reorganisation that didn’t propagate through the typed checklist, or a deliberate convention is not stated by the document. First William Garnett plate in the catalog (a grep of data/photographs.csv this session returns no prior ‘Garnett’ photographer row); the canonical spelling of the photographer’s name has NOT been cross-verified against any fetched source this round. Section 14 LAND mapped to sec-work per the photo-0114/photo-0115 cluster-mapping notes. The pre-existing photo-0135 note flagged the existence of #506 in the catalog but did not seed it; this row closes that gap as part of the catalog-completion reconciliation pass. Final row count after this batch: 490 plate rows = 503 numbered slots − 17 missing-number gaps (counting bare #11 since the printed checklist contains no entry ‘11’ without a letter suffix) + 1 (#11A unique row) + 1 (#404A added) + 2 out-of-range three-digit plates (this row + photo-0490). See research/catalog-reconciliation-503.md for the canonical full derivation including the 16-vs-17 counting-convention note.
