Citation

The Bitter Years 1935–1941: Rural America as Seen by the Photographers of the Farm Security Administration. Curated by Edward Steichen, Director Emeritus, Department of Photography. Museum of Modern Art, New York. 18 October – 25 November 1962.

Tier justification

Tier 3: the canonical MoMA exhibition page (moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/3506) returned HTTP 403 in this session and was not directly read. The exhibition dates (18 October – 25 November 1962) and Steichen’s “Director Emeritus” curatorial role are recorded from the Wikipedia article Edward Steichen (re-fetched 2026-05-02 from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Steichen) — verbatim: “The Bitter Years: 1935–1941” (October 18–November 25, 1962), and “Director Emeritus.” Per CREDIBILITY.md Wikipedia is pointer-only and an institutional MoMA page would be required to promote this entry to Tier 1 / Tier 2.

Relevance

The Bitter Years was Steichen’s last MoMA exhibition before his retirement and the conceptual counterweight to The Family of Man: where the 1955 show assembled a global humanist montage, The Bitter Years re-presented Roy Stryker’s Depression-era FSA archive (Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, Jack Delano, Ben Shahn, Russell Lee, et al.) as a documentary record of American hardship. The seven-year gap between the two exhibitions tracks Steichen’s curatorial arc from the universalist 1955 statement to the historically-specific 1962 statement — a contrast that figures heavily in 1960s and later critical reception of his MoMA tenure.

The exhibition was subsequently bequeathed to Luxembourg by Steichen and is today permanently installed at the Dudelange Waassertuerm (water tower) under CNA stewardship. The CNA’s institutional account of the Luxembourg arc (1965 gift; 1989 transfer to CNA; 28 September 2012 opening at the Dudelange Waassertuerm; December 2020 closure) is at https://www.steichencollections-cna.lu/eng/collections/2_the-bitter-years — fetched and quoted inline in site/steichen.md footnote [^16] (PR #101) but not yet registered as its own src- entry in this repo. A future batch should formalise it as src-cna-collections-eng-bitter-years.
