The Bitter Years was Steichen’s last MoMA exhibition before his retirement and the conceptual counterweight to The Family of Man: where the 1955 show assembled a global humanist montage, The Bitter Years re-presented Roy Stryker’s Depression-era FSA archive (Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, Jack Delano, Ben Shahn, Russell Lee, et al.) as a documentary record of American hardship.
