Photography Against the Grain: Essays and Photo Works, 1973–1983
Reprinted: Rochester, NY: Visual Studies Workshop Press, 1984.
Relevance
The collected essays that bring together Sekula’s foundational materialist critique of photography as ideology, including earlier versions and companion texts to “The Traffic in Photographs” (1981, src-sekula-1981). This collection is the canonical book-form gathering of Sekula’s most influential theoretical essays from the decade 1973–1983. It constitutes the single most important institutional presentation of the Marxist-materialist critique of photography’s ideological function — the theoretical position from which The Family of Man’s claims to universal humanism were most systematically challenged in the period.
The NSCAD Press (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design) is an art-school academic press; Sekula is named in CREDIBILITY.md as a “critical theory of record” author at Tier 2.

Notes
- This collection predates the 1981 Art Journal publication of “The Traffic in Photographs” by three years — see note in
src-sekula-1986regarding the citation-date inconsistency between the NSCAD book (1984) and the Block reprint (1986), and between the NSCAD book (1984) and the Art Journal essay (1981). The resolution of these dates — determining which essays appeared first in which venue — is a documented open question not resolved in this session. - The NSCAD Press reprint by Visual Studies Workshop (Rochester, NY) is noted; publication details for that edition NOT verified independently in this round.
